If you prefer a natural approach or simply don’t have OTCs on hand, you can alternate hot and cold compresses. The heat helps relax your sore back muscles as well as the inflammation causing the pain. Heat also improves oxygen circulation, which helps repair your back muscles. You can also relax in a warm bath for a similar effect.
On the other hand, cold compresses are great for swelling and numbing pain. Be sure to always wrap the ice in a towel to avoid direct contact with your skin. Also, only keep your cold compress on for a maximum of 20 minutes at a time.
Back pain not only hurts, but it can also affect your entire life when left unchecked. Once you experience chronic pain, try reducing your symptoms with natural solutions like compression. You can also take over-the-counter medication to minimize the inflammation.
